First victory for Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party

Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) notched its first electoral victory.

Municipal chairman of Mangrol town in Rajasthan’s Baran district, Ashok Jain, won the confidence of public after members of the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP forced him to face the electorate under the Right to Recall provision.

Jain is a member of AAP’s national council.

Jain came out triumphant as most of the voters reposed confidence in him through electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The voters had to opt between two choices, namely occupied chair and unoccupied chair.

In terms of statistics, of the 10, 998 valid votes, 7,243 were in favour of Jain’s continuance while 3,755 wanted him removed.

It is worthwhile pointing out that this was the first ever public referendum in the state in line with the Rajasthan Municipal (amendment) Act, 2009.

Jain won despite not playing a prominent part in the campaign due to a fractured spine.

Jain campaign was looked after by, among others, a team of more than two dozen volunteers of the AAP.
