Facebook has started testing a new version of its app that will open up to Snapchat-like camera just above the ‘What’s on your mind?’ box. The social-media giant will beta test the feature in Canada and Brazil until the Olympics. In the new version, first thing that users will see when they open the app is an option to open the camera. From here on, they can click pictures or shoot videos and upload them directly after adding MSQRD (Masquerade) AI filters. The new Facebook app greets users with a message, “Open your camera to play with creative photo effects.” Facebook acquired MSQRD app in 2013. The app offers filters that are very similar to Snapchat, including the ability to do face swap etc on Live Videos. Facebook is basically trying to make it easier for users to play around with their pictures and upload them directly from the app.

Facebook Product Manager Sachin Mong, in a statement to Tech Crusnch said, “12 years ago, most of what was shared was text, so Facebook’s status composer with a big white text box. Now, mobile changed things a little bit, but we didn’t really change our tools. If you look at what people are sharing, now it’s mostly photos, and soon it will be mostly videos. Our strategy is really simple. We want to make it really easy to share photos and videos.” In a video put out by the site, we see filters that will put Canadian flag on both of a user’s cheek. There’s also video filters that allow people to put across a Canadian flag or text such as ‘Team Canada’ before sharing the video on Facebook.

The new Facebook version is only available for iOS, Android in Canada and only iOS in Brazil. While Facebook is beta testing the feature for now, we could expect it to roll out for users across the world anytime soon.
