WHO clearance good for Indian vaccine exports

Good news for India’s private vaccine manufacturing pharmaceutical companies, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India’s national regulatory authority satisfy the prescribed international standards.

Point to be noted here is that India is a major vaccine producer with more than 12 major vaccine manufacturing facilities. These vaccines are used for both national and international market, reaching around 150 countries.

You would be surprise to know that every second child in the world is vaccinated for measles with the help of a vaccine produced in India.

India is the first country this year to have cleared the stringent guidelines of seven indicators which are made more tougher every time in a single evaluation round which is conducted by a team of 12 international experts headed by a WHO member.

The clearance of this examination means that 12 private vaccine manufacturing units from India are going to retain the pre-qualification status for supplying vaccines to international organizations such as the WHO, World Bank and UNICEF.

WHO pre-qualification is pretty much a guarantee that a specific vaccine is in line with the international guidelines of quality, safety and efficacy.

The WHO clearance is going to give a massive boost to investment in the pharma sector.
