Yuzvendra Chahal, Barinder Sran dismantle Zimbabwe

For the second time in three days, Zimbabwe batsmen cut a sorry figure as Yuzvendra Chahal and Barinder Sran orchestrated their collapse in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the Harare Sports Club on Monday (June 13). Vusi Sibanda’s fighting fifty gave the hosts some hope of a competitive total before his exit in the 28th over led to a lower-order collapse.

Opting to bowl on a chilly morning, left-armer Sran once again troubled the Zimbabwe openers with the ball that swung back into them. The hosts sent out Hamilton Masakadza, their most experienced player, to open the innings in place of Peter Moor, a move that didn’t play off. Despite the trouble that the moving deliveries were causing, it was poor half-volley outside the off-stump that brought about Masakadza’s wicket. He went hard at the width offered to him and ended slicing it to Jasprit Bumrah at third man in the fifth over.

Like on Saturday, one wicket brought a couple more as Moor and Chamu Chibhabha too were back in the hut before long. Dhawal Kulkarni got lucky with Chibhabha’s dismissal as replays showed his big shout for a leg before should’ve been turned down. The umpire’s error left the hosts struggling at 39 for 3 in 10 overs.

A 67-run partnership between Sibanda and Sikandar Raza helped Zimbabwe recover, during which the two batsmen dealt with spinners Axar Patel and Chahal with a lot of confidence. Chahal had an indifferent start to his spell, being easily negotiated by the two set batsmen. Yet, the scoring wasn’t moving along too quickly and Raza’s attempt to facilitate that resulted in his dismissal. Chahal kept bowling full to the right-hander and was eventually rewarded as Raza’s uppish heave went to Kedar Jadhav at long on.

Once again, Zimbabwe were rocked by losing wickets in a cluster. Elton Chigumbura was done in by the flight offered by Chahal and was beaten enough to be struck on the pads in line and sent packing for a first-ball duck. Clearly miffed with the proceedings, a set Sibanda threw his wicket away in Chahal’s following over, as his attempted slog sweep took the leading edge and went towards long on where Jadhav accepted his second catch of the match.

To add to their woes, Sean Williams, who was roped in for the injured Craig Ervine, hurt his finger during warm-ups after the toss was done and was unavailable to bat. From 106 for 3, Zimbabwe folded at 126 for 9 in the 35th over, giving India a straight forward chance of wrapping up the series.
